CHAPLET OF THE HOLY FACE OF JESUS
SR. MARY OF ST. PETER WAS TO WAGE WARAGAINST THE COMMUNISTS
Sr. Mary of St. Peter was a Holy Carmelite Nun of Tours, France. On November 24, 1843, our Lord spoke to her and told her that he would punish the world for sins against the first three commandments which are the denial of God, blasphemy, and the profanation of Sundays. These sins renew the wounds on the Holy Face of Jesus during His passion and anger the Triune God Himself (Scallan, 2012, p. 157). If the people did not turn back to God, He would allow the world to be punished not by “the elements” but by “the malice of revolutionary men” (Scallan, 2012, p.177). The Lord warned Sr. St. Peter that the Communists were “the enemies” of the Catholic Church and her Christ (Scallan, 2012, pp. 202, 204). They had a secret diabolic plot to inflame the world (Scallan, 2012, p. 198). He commanded Sr. St. Peter to make reparation for their sins and to wage war against the Communists (Scallan, 2012, pp. 202, 204).
ST. VERONICA WAS APPOINTED TO BE THE PROTECTRESS AND WAS A MODELFOR WOMEN IN THE HOLY FACE DEVOTION
The Lord revealed to Sr. St. Peter that “I seek Veronicas to wipe and venerate My Divine Face which has but few adorers” (Scallan, 2012, p. 157). St. Veronica was appointed to be the Protectress for the Holy Face Devotion (Scallan, 2012, p. 153; Janvier, 1884 p. 239). When she saw Him carrying His cross to Calvary with His Face covered with blood, sweat, dust, and spittle, she was filled with compassion. She courageously broke through the mob of people and the brutal executioners and wiped His Face with her veil. That act of kindness consoled and strengthened Him. St. Veronica could have been stoned to death for stepping out of line to be merciful toward Jesus. Sr. St. Peter said that Jesus had a special tender love for St. Veronica and looked kindly upon her. He immediately showed His gratitude by rewarding her with a magnificent image of His Wounded Holy Face on her veil which is currently stored at the Vatican (Scallan, 2012, p. 153; Janvier, 1887, pp. 75-76; Janvier, 1884, p. 239).
St. Veronica was the first person to make reparation for the wounds Jesus suffered on His Holy Face. The Lord made Sr. St. Peter to understand that when the wicked commit the sin of blasphemy, they renew the violent outrages that were lodged upon the Face of Jesus which disfigured it. Blasphemy is like the spittle that the mob spat on Jesus’ Face. (Scallan, 2012, pp. 153, 157; Janvier, 1884, pg. 238).
Although St. Veronica’s life was not written in the Gospels, it is sufficiently well known and authenticated by outside sources such as the apocryphal “Acts of Pilate” and by the tradition of the Catholic Church. According to tradition, St. Veronica was the woman who bled for 12 years and was healed when she touched the hem of Jesus’ garment (Matthew 9:20). She is honored in the sixth station in the Way of the Cross (Janvier, 1887, p.76).
The Lord told Sr. St. Peter that she must imitate the zeal of St. Veronica. St. Veronica was given to the Holy Face Devotion as a model for women to imitate. They are to soothe Jesus’ Holy Face in reparation for blasphemers by prayer, praise, and adoration (Scallan, 2012, p. 153; Janvier, 1887, p. 75). Jesus’ portrait on Veronica’s Veil is the image that is used as veneration in the Holy Face Devotion (Janvier, 1887, pp.52, 79).

ST. DISMAS, THE GOOD THIEF, WAS A MODEL FOR MEN IN THE HOLY FACE DEVOTION
Jesus revealed that St. Dismas, the Good Thief, was given to the Holy Face Devotion as a model for men. He courageously defended Jesus’ cause for the salvation of mankind from his cross like from a pulpit. Like a priest, he proclaimed the innocence and holiness of Jesus. At the very moment the other thief and Jews were cursing and condemning him he attempted to silence these blasphemers by testifying to the Lordship of Jesus. St. Dismas looked at Jesus and said “Lord, remember me when thou shalt come into Thy Kingdom” (Luke 23:42) (Janvier, 1884, pp. 263-266).
Then, Jesus’ Divine Face glanced at St. Dismas with compassion and assured him “Verily, I say unto thee, this day, thou shalt be with me in Paradise” (Luke 23:43). Jesus gave St. Dismas a special place in heaven for his testimony (Janvier, 1884, p. 266).
Sr. St. Peter wrote that many Popes and Doctors of the Church wrote about the faith of St. Dismas. According to St. John Chrysostom, the faith of St. Dismas surpassed that of Abraham, of Moses, and of Isaiah. Those prophets saw Christ seated on the throne surrounded by Glory and they believed. However, St. Dismas saw Jesus on the cross as a criminal condemned to death, yet he adored and invoked Him as if He were gloriously seated in heaven as God. The Good Thief immediately became an evangelist and a prophet. He preached Christ crucified and proclaimed Him as King of the eternal kingdom (Janvier, 1887, pp. 77-78; Janvier, 1884, pp. 264-267).
In the Holy Face Devotion, St. Dismas is a model for men to imitate, especially for priests and ministers of the Church. They are to preach about Jesus and to publicly defend Him (Scallan, 2012, pg. 172; Janvier, 1887, pp. 77-79).

REVELATION OF THE HOLY FACE CHAPLET
Sr. St. Peter wrote on November 15, 1843, “Our Lord inspired me at this time to compose certain prayers of reparation in the form of a chaplet, or a small rosary. This chaplet is made up of 33 small beads, on which is recited 33 times the prayer, ‘Arise, Oh Lord, and let Your enemies be scattered, and let those that hate Thee flee before Your Face,’ and also six large beads on which are recited the ejaculation, ‘My Jesus, Mercy,’ followed by the doxology, ‘Glory be to the Father, etc.’
One day after Holy Mass our Lord appeared to me presenting me with a similar chaplet which I saw was made of precious stones strung on a fine gold chain. Deeming myself quite unworthy of possessing such a treasure, I begged the Blessed Virgin to keep this beautiful rosary for me by placing it in her Immaculate Heart. I also begged our Lord to attach indulgences to the recitation of this chaplet” (Scallan, 2012, p. 124).

THE HOLY FACE CHAPLET WAS APPROVED BYPOPE LEO XIII ON OCTOBER 1, 1885THROUGH THE ARCHCONFRATERNITY OF THE HOLY FACE
The 1887 Manual of the Archconfraternity of the Holy Face decreed that the “chaplet of the Holy Face has for its object the honouring of the five senses of our Lord Jesus Christ, and of entreating God for the triumph of his Church. This chaplet is composed of a cross of 39 beads, six of which are large, and 33 small, and of a medal of the Holy Face. It is well to recite it every day, in order to obtain from God, by means of the Face of His well-beloved Son, the triumph of our mother the Catholic Church, and the downfall of her enemies. The Cross recalls to us the mystery of our Redemption; we must sign ourselves with it and make the invocation: Deus, in adjutorium meum intende: Domine, ad adjuvandum me festina; (O God, come to my assistance: Oh Lord, make haste to help me;) followed by the Gloria Patri (Glory Be). The 33 small beads represent the 33 years of the mortal life of our Lord. The first 30 recall to mind the 30 years of his private life, and are divided into five sixes with the intention of honouring the five senses of TOUCH, HEARING, SIGHT, SMELL, and TASTE of Jesus, which have their seat principally in His Holy Face, and of rendering homage to all the sufferings which our Lord endured in His Face, through each one of these senses. Each of these sixes is preceded by a large bead in honour of the sense which it is intended to honour, and is followed by a Gloria Patri (Glory Be). The three small beads recall to mind the public life of the Saviour and have for their object the honouring of all the wounds of His adorable Face; the large bead which precedes them has the same object in view and is followed by a Gloria Patri (Glory Be). On each bead, must be said: My Jesus, mercy! (100 days indulgence). And on each small one: Arise, O Lord, and let Thy enemies be scattered, and let all that hate Thee flee from before Thy Face.
The Gloria (Glory Be) is repeated seven times, in order to honour the seven words of Jesus upon the Cross, and the seven dolours of the Immaculate Virgin. When terminating it, we must say over the medal: God, our Protector, look on us, and cast Thy eyes upon the Face of Thy Christ” (Janvier, 1887, pp. 234-235).

AMBIGUITY IN THE INSTRUCTIONSAND CONFIGURATIONOF THE HOLY FACE CHAPLET
NOTE: Sr. St. Peter DID provide us with a sketch of the Holy Face of Jesus chaplet. However, she DID NOT provide specific instructions or configuration of the chaplet. She DID NOT specify the parts to be used such as a cross, crucifix, or medal. Additionally, because the 1887 Manual of the Archconfraternity is written in an old English style, its instructions and configuration are ambiguous. Furthermore, due to the various translations of resources from French into English, there are consequently many versions.
MY SEARCH TO FIND CHURCH APPROVED INSTRUCTIONS ANDCONFIGURATION OF THE HOLY FACE CHAPLET
In the spirit of obedience and love, and to please our Lord like Sr. St. Peter, I wanted to find the most efficacious “original Church approved” configuration and instructions on how to make and pray the chaplet. In my research, I found two configurations. One with five beads (two large and three small) on the tail of the chaplet and 34 beads within the body of it. The other configuration with three small beads on the tail of the chaplet and 36 beads within the body of it.
I corresponded with Mary Jane Zuzolo who is a relative of Sr. St. Peter and is the author of “Unveiling the Sixth Station of the Cross” (www.HolyFaceDevotion.org). She has an antique chaplet which was the property of Sr. St. Peter’s brother (Mrs. Zuzolo’s great-great-great-grandfather), Prosper Eluere, who emigrated from France to America in 1840. The chaplet was given to him by the Carmelites of New Orleans in 1885. Mrs. Zuzolo wrote to me that she has a letter from them to her relative. The chaplet is pictured on p. 2. Notice that it has five beads (two large and three small) on the tail of the chaplet (M. Zuzolo, personal communication, September 17, 2023).
I also corresponded with Fr. Lawrence Carney, III, Apostle of the Holy Face, Spiritual Director of the League of St. Martin, and author of “The Secret of the Holy Face” (www.martinians.org). As this devotion has grown through the Holy Spirit, Fr. Carney, himself, has changed and revised the configuration and instructions. He wrote to me that he is trying to make a standard version for the League of St. Martin. He instructed me to follow the configuration of the antique chaplet given to Mrs. Zuzolo’s relative. (L. Carney, personal communication, September 18, 2023). In the spirit of obedience, this is the configuration that I follow to make my chaplets (www.VeilofVeronica.com). I have provided the latest version of the instructions from Fr. Carney (www.martinians.org). If there are any future changes, I will make the appropriate revisions to this booklet.

ARE YOU WILLING TO IMITATE SR. ST. PETER,ST. VERONICA, AND/OR ST. DISMAS?
Do you have the heart to console the Holy and Wounded Face of Jesus? Are you willing to make reparation for the sins against the first three commandments which anger God Himself? Are you brave enough to wage war against the Communists in hope of their conversion? Are you willing to imitate Sr. St. Peter? Do you have the courage to be a spiritual soldier who unites under Jesus and who defends our insulted injured Commander-in-Chief (Scallan, 2012, pp. 134, 204)? Will you volunteer to enter the battlefield fortified with the Cross and other instruments of Jesus’ torture as weapons (Scallan, 2012, p. 207), with the Holy Name of God as ammunition (Scallan, 2012, p. 204), and with the Blessed Virgin as the General of the armies of the Lord and the storage unit for the weapons (Janvier, 1884, p. 331; Scallan, 2012, p. 203)? Will you answer the call of our Lord who is looking for “Veronicas” to console Him by wiping His Wounded Face with prayer, praise, and adoration? Do you have the faith of St. Dismas to preach about Jesus’ kingdom and to publicly defend Him in the midst of scoffers?
By praying the Holy Face of Jesus Chaplet, you can demonstrate your faith, love, and adoration for Him. It is an unfailing prayer of reparation to appeal for the mercy of God and to stop the diabolic plan of the Communists, now better known as the Global Elites. St. Athanasius said that the scripture passage most feared by demons which always compels them to flee from the presence of God is Psalm 68:1: “Let God arise and let His enemies be scattered; let those who hate Him flee before him” (www.HolyFaceDevotion.com). In hope of the enemy’s conversion, may God arise to soften their hearts.
With the intercession of Sr. St. Peter, I have tried to compile the most accurate way of praying the Holy Face Chaplet with group instructions for a LEADER and FOLLOWERS. As you pray this Holy Face Chaplet, I pray that the Lord bestows upon you the marvelous supernatural graces that He promised in this devotion.

PROMISES OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST FOR THOSE WHO HONOR HIS HOLY FACE
• “By My Holy Face you will work miracles”(Scallan, 2012, p. 158; Janvier, 1885, pp. 56,129; Janvier, 1887, p.87).
• “By My Holy Face you will obtain the conversion of many sinners. Nothing that you ask in making this offering will be refused to you. No one can know how pleasing the sight of my Face is to my Father” (Scallan, 2012, p. 182; Janvier, 1885, pp. 56, 129; Janvier, 1887, p.87).
• All those who honor My Holy Face, in a spirit of reparation, render Me the same service as did St. Veronica. I look upon those who perform this act with the same love as when I gazed on St. Veronica on My way to Calvary (Scallan, 2012, p. 157; Janvier, 1885, p. 53, 55, 130).
• All those who defend My cause in the Work of Reparation, especially my priests, through prayers, words, or writings, I will defend them before My Heavenly Father and give them My Kingdom. At their death I will purify their souls by effacing all the blots of sin and will restore to them their primitive beauty (Scallan, 2012, p. 172; Janvier, 1884, p. 263-264; Janvier, 1887, pp 88).
• As in an earthly kingdom, you can purchase all you desire with a coin marked with the picture of the ruler, so in the Kingdom of Heaven you can purchase all you desire with the coin of My Adorable Face (Scallan, 2012, p. 161; Janvier, 1885, p. 57; Janvier, 1887, p.87). • “He will imprint His Divine likeness on the souls of those who honor his Most Holy Countenance. This Adorable Face is the seal of the Divinity, which has the virtue of reproducing the likeness of God in the souls that are applied to it” (Janvier, 1885, p. 129; Janvier, 1887, p. 87).
• According to the care you take in making reparation to My Face disfigured by blasphemies, so will I take the care of your soul disfigured by sin. I will imprint my image upon it and make it as beautiful as when it came forth from the baptismal font (Janvier, 1884, p. 254; Janvier 1885, pg. 59, 185; Janvier, 1887, pp 87-88).
• “Every time you offer My Face to My Father, I will open my mouth to demand mercy” (Janvier, 1884, p. 395; Janvier, 1885, p. 82).
• “Those who will contemplate the wounds of My Face on earth shall one day contemplate it radiant with glory in Heaven” (Janvier, 1884, p. 398; Janvier, 1885, p. 84).
• “They will receive in their souls a bright and constant irradiation of My Divinity, that by their likeness to My Face they shall shine with particular splendor in Heaven” (Scallan, 2012, p. 233, Janvier, 1887, p. 86).
• “I will defend them, I will preserve them, and I assure them of Final Perseverance” (Scallan, 2012, p. 233).

CAN MIRACLES REALLY HAPPEN?
Due to the French Revolution that affected Italy, on January 6, 1849 Pope Pius IX ordered that the spear of Longinus, the relic of the True Cross, and the true relic of Veronica’s Veil be brought out so the people of Rome could pray and venerate them to stop the Revolution. The image of Jesus’ Face (which was not visible) on Veronica’s Veil became illuminated and was clearly seen as if it were living. For three hours hundreds of people witnessed this. The Vatican clergy certified this as a miracle. At that time, photography was not invented. Consequently, artists were brought in to draw what they saw. Soon afterward copies of the True Image of the Holy Face of Jesus on the Veil of Veronica were printed and touched to those relics. Several of these true copies were sent abroad.
Venerable Leon Dupont, who promoted the Holy Face Devotion after the death of Sr. St. Peter, received one of these certified copies. He made a shrine with the Holy Face image in his home and kept an oil lamp burning in front of it continuously day and night. Over the course of 30 years, he prayed the prayers that the Lord dictated to Sr. St. Peter with thousands of people in his shrine and applied the oil to their ailing body parts. There were about 6,000 certified miracles that occurred through the Devotion of the Holy Face (Scallan, 1952). Pope Pius IX declared Venerable Dupont to be “perhaps the greatest miracle worker in Church history” (Scallan 1952, back cover).
When reading these promises, you may question whether they seem to be too grand and marvelous to come true. Should they be taken literally? Today, could miracles like that truly happen through this devotion? The answer is YES! Pray the Holy Face Chaplet of Jesus and trust that the Lord will keep His promises for those who honor His Holy Face!
